Symptoms of food poisoning gone
One evening years ago, when I was in the United States Air Force and stationed in Japan, I experienced what I later learned were severe symptoms of food poisoning. I couldn’t stand up for long and felt very weak, but was able to get to a phone and call a Christian Science practitioner, an American I had met who was living in Tokyo. He read me a statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that he asked me to think about and apply to myself, and then he assured me he’d “get right on it” (he would pray for me right away). This was very encouraging, since I was having trouble thinking straight and all I wanted to do was sleep.
Here’s the statement he read to me: “When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony” (Science and Health, p. 495).
As I hung up the phone, I immediately began focusing on these wise admonitions, which promptly produced a wonderful feeling of safety and a sense of confidence. I knew right then that I was just fine and that this would soon be obvious. I was very encouraged, and any fear I had just evaporated like a mist in bright sunlight.
