You can beat the fear—with God

I was getting ready for bed and a thunderstorm started. The lightning scared me. I tried to think about the things I learned in Sunday School. The first thing I thought of was a definition of fear, which is “false evidence appearing real.” It means that when you are afraid things look real that aren’t really true. Only good things that God makes are real.

The next thing I thought of was from Hymn 31 in the Christian Science Hymnal. The words were written by Mary Baker Eddy. In the first verse it says: “The arrow that doth wound the dove / Darts not from those who watch and love.” I knew that God loved me and was watching over me. Then I changed the words a little bit. I thought, “The thunder that has scared me comes not from God, who watches over me.”  

After thinking that for a long time, I went to tell my mom that I should have a copy of the Hymnal on my Kindle and that I wasn’t scared anymore. I went back to bed and counted the seconds to see how many miles away the storm was. I wanted to see whether or not I should put a blanket lightly over my ears so the thunder wouldn’t bother me while I tried to sleep.
