Abdominal pain healed

In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy states: “Trials are proofs of God’s care” (p. 66). The verity of this statement has been proved to me on many occasions. A recent one was earlier this year when my husband and I spent several months traveling in New Zealand, enjoying its summer, extraordinary beauty, and boundless hospitality.

One evening near the end of our stay, I began experiencing severe abdominal cramps, which persisted throughout the night. The wakefulness that resulted was a great opportunity to pray. I tried to stay focused on the spiritual truths about God and man. Through the study of Christian Science, I’ve learned that since God is All-in-all, and is wholly good, goodness must be everywhere—boundless and limitless. Therefore, it must be expressed in my experience. The first chapter of Genesis sets forth these facts: “God created man in his own image,” and “saw every thing that he had made, and . . . it was very good” (1:27, 31). It’s hard to make it much clearer than that. I held to the idea that God, Mind, produces only good and as an element of Mind’s self-expression—His image—I could experience only goodness, harmony, and peace.

Mrs. Eddy wrote seven poems that were put to music and are included in the Christian Science Hymnal. I’ve found that praying with these hymns, especially at nighttime, is helpful in keeping my thoughts focused away from suggestions of fear and discomfort. That’s what I did on this occasion and was able to gain some rest. However, when the trouble persisted the next day and it became increasingly difficult to walk without pain, I felt the need to e-mail a Christian Science practitioner in the United States for prayerful support.
