Weekly refreshment

The articles on prayer in the September 19 Sentinel [“How does prayer work?”] are timely and extremely helpful, especially those by Allison Phinney (“Christianly scientific prayer”) and S. P. James (“Prayers of petition and praise”). As a longtime student of Christian Science, I cannot thank you enough for the weekly refreshment and guidance that you are offering us. Thank you, thank you.

September 19 Sentinel

In “Let Love write our life script” from the September 19 Sentinel, I really enjoyed what Diana Davis Butler had to say about acting in a play scripted by mortal mind. It became so clear to me that we do this all the time—buy into the script that is mesmerizing us into believing in a material existence. She says, “. . . we can take a closer look at our ‘life script’ and see that it lines up with the spiritual truth of our being.” How? she asks. By knowing that God designed our life and wrote the true script and that is the only script we need to read. I can’t tell you how much this thrilled me to see how easy it really is to recognize true selfhood. The Bible is full of stories like this.

I also was lifted by what Skip Phinney said prayer was: “. . . the lessening of self-assertion that allows us to begin to realize God’s perfection and the true nature of all of us . . . .”

These articles have meant so much to me since I have been struggling to know that inspiration is always here.

In “Items of Interest” I was thrilled with the honor being bestowed on Janet Horton for all the wonderful ways she has served our country and Christian Science in her career as a US Army Chaplain.

And “Lonely? Play by God’s rules” is outstanding in addressing a situation that affects so many teens, and Dorian Atkins did a wonderful job in showing how he overcame this. I struggled with this as a teen, and coming into Christian Science really helped me. This is something I will share with my grandsons.

Like a box of chocolates

Each issue of the Sentinel is such a delight. I love to take a moment when it arrives to send a great big thank you your way. I look carefully at the cover, turn to the listing of what is in the issue, and read the testimonies. Although they arrive in advance, I work with each one during its week. Like a box of my favorite chocolates, I make it last all week. And the next issue is on the desk just waiting its turn.

A special thanks to all of you.

Healed by reading the Sentinel

I want to give my gratitude for the May 9 Sentinel, “Allergies? There’s a healing solution.” This summer my husband and I were vacationing in Michigan when I began sneezing uncontrollably. I had what appeared to be an allergic reaction to something in the environment. After picking up this Sentinel and reading it, I was healed of this reaction. I learned that there is nothing harmful in God’s environment.

Thanks to all of those great contributors to this healing Sentinel!
