Infection and injury healed

First published in Le Héraut de la Science Chrétienne, the French edition of The Herald of Christian Science.

More than one year ago, at the beginning of a week, I found myself lying on my couch, a pair of crutches by my side and a prescription in my hand for all kinds of medications. This was several days after a lump had formed on one of my legs, painless at first, then more and more painful and making it difficult for me to walk. At first I had ignored the problem, but as time went by, the pain became constant and the lump took on a troubling aspect. So I decided to pray as I had learned through my study of Christian Science. For two or three days this enabled me to help myself in confronting the initial fear and overcoming the pain.

My wife, who does not practice Christian Science, was alarmed at my situation (I could understand her concern) and advised me to consult a doctor. Experience had taught me to have complete confidence in God, good, and in spiritual healing but, for love of my wife, I took advantage of the fact that I had to accompany one of my children to a medical appointment and asked the doctor to examine me.

The doctor uttered a cry of horror when he saw the growth on my leg. He cleaned the wound and diagnosed it as the result of an insect bite. He said that at this stage, in order to cure it, I had to take antibiotics. When I asked him, “What would happen if I did not take the drugs?” he replied bluntly, “Well, you will end up in the emergency room!”
