Our occasional series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.

A sense of belonging that is ‘gold’

When I arrived in the world, my mother and grandmother were fearful for my life, as I coughed and choked when I was fed. The doctor had said there was little he could do. My grandmother, a Christian Scientist, asked my mother if she could ring a Christian Science practitioner to pray for healing. My mother agreed and I was healed instantaneously. This experience convinced my mother that Christian Science was the way of truth for her. From then on, she and my father pursued the teachings of Christian Science.

My childhood was filled with a sense of security and love. My sister and I went to Sunday School at the local Christian Science group in our small town. My sense of God’s healing power began through my time in the Sunday School, and I can say with conviction that this has never left me.

During my teens and early twenties, though, I moved away from Christian Science and experienced what the world had to offer. I found it confusing and fell into some bad habits which led me through very tumultuous seas. But God’s love doesn’t leave us! Looking back, I can see many times when I felt God turning my face the right way. I would pray spasmodically, but always I had a sense that God was there. At that time I would often tell people about Christian Science and felt it did work for those who used it, but somehow didn’t want to go back to it myself. Eventually I left New Zealand and flew to Australia.
