SPORTS IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

SPORTS HAVE A DOMINATING cultural presence and affect the lives and livelihoods of millions throughout the world. They're certainly a subject for Christian thinking, even as we recognize in them both the hand of God and—for example, in recent scandals and ethical violations—the work of evil.

So suggests Shirl James Hoffman, emeritus professor of exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina, at Greenboro, in his book, Good Game: Christianity and the Culture of Sports.

But anyone tempted to tackle Good Game will need the stamina and patience of tennis pros John Isner and Nicolas Mahut (who played more than five hours over three days at Wimbledon); the enthusiasm and courage of Alpine ski–racing gold medalist Lindsey Vonn; and the controlled discipline of Spain in the 2010 World Cup football tournament.
