SHARING THE VIEW

Our occasional series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.

WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I told a Christian Science lecturer of my plan to go into the full-time Christian Science healing practice right after graduation. He was very kind, telling me to cherish the desire, but not to "outline" how this would come about. I knew that my main desire was to serve others. Still, my college experience was not followed by the public practice of Christian Science, but by jobs, travel, marriage, family, career, and more education.

Throughout the years, I always cherished the idea of praying for and with others, but I also loved the many other experiences that kept coming my way. For 30 years I taught English, then courses on the Bible, got a doctorate, and eventually taught and lectured on the Bible. I enjoyed my career. Each day I felt I was "about my Father's business," even though it wasn't the Christian Science practitioner role that I had anticipated.
