A LIFETIME OF LEARNING AND HEALING

The Sentinel's Ingrid Peschke spoke with Christian Science teachers and practitioners Tom Black, Christiane West Little, and Rebecca Odegaard to get their take on Christian Science class instruction—what it is, why we have it, and how it can help you learn to heal.

INGRID PESCHKE: Let's start with a basic question. What exactly is Christian Science class instruction?

CHRISTIANE WEST LITTLE: Class instruction is a wonderful opportunity to get closer to God, and to learn to heal as Jesus healed. It's a twelve-day course in which students go deeply into the chapter "Recapitulation" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. "Recapitulation" is like a summary of the whole book, and it's actually the textbook that Mary Baker Eddy herself used as she was teaching her classes. (It was copyrighted in 1870.) It's a time where you would ideally focus only on the class—you'd dedicate your twelve days to that, and not have some other activities going on during that time.
