TO KNOW THAT GOD EXISTS

TIMOTHY KELLER, founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, is probably best known for a ministry that for more than 20 years has led a generation of spiritual seekers and skeptics toward belief in God. His book The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism, which has just been issued in paperback, expands that ministry.

Newsweek has described Keller as a Manhattan institution, "one of those open urban secrets, like your favorite dim sum place, with a following so ardent and so fast-growing that he has never thought to advertise."

Redeemer Church has five Sunday services in three rented locations, with an average total attendance of 5,000—mainly young people you would expect to be sleeping off a late Saturday night. The largest gathering is on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where services follow a traditional pattern (without video monitors), including hymns, prayers, and Bible texts, with the organ and a brass quartet leading the music.
