The Olympics pose a challenge for us all

This week the Sentinel looks at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. For some readers, this is a topic of great personal interest. Over the course of 17 days (Aug. 8-24), they'll do all they can to see as many televised events as possible. Others will watch more casually. And some will say that, quite frankly, they're just not interested in the Olympics.

Whatever category best describes your own interest level, this week's look at the Games from a spiritual perspective shows they have something important to ask of us all—and something to give as well.

First, the Olympics mark a significant world event—one that, for all its splendor, has also sparked significant contention, over issues ranging from China's treatment of Tibet to the use of performance-enhancing drugs among contestants. The safety of participants and spectators is always a concern at gatherings of this magnitude. There's an ongoing need for us to take this event into our thoughts and prayers, so that the spirit of harmony and goodwill that marks the noble intentions of the Olympics will shine through.
