MANY BLESSINGS THROUGH CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

Christian Science was introduced to our family in the late 1920s when my brother was healed through prayer of diagnosed tuberculosis. Since then, our family has experienced many healings. Some were quick, and some came more gradually, such as one dramatic healing that occurred in the 1970s.

I began to have pain and stiffness in my joints, making it very difficult for me to be normally active. This condition worsened, even though I was having help in prayer from a Christian Science practitioner. In desperation, I sought medical help. The condition was diagnosed as osteoarthritis and was considered incurable. Various medications were prescribed—mostly to relieve me of pain.

Then, I got in touch with another practitioner. Her response to my fear of the pain that might result if I stopped the medication was, "Christian Scientists take medicine, but our medicine is Mind." By this she meant that God, the divine Mind, is the supreme healing power. I would call her at the beginning of each day, and was always given inspiring spiritual insights to pray with. I especially enjoyed a selection from page 354 of Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896 by Mary Baker Eddy: "A little more grace, a motive made pure, a few truths tenderly told, a heart softened, a character subdued, a life consecrated, would restore the right action of the mental mechanism, and make manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God."
