PEACE IN AN ELECTION SEASON
THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION in the United States is still months away. But as it occupies daily news and conversations, I've decided to pray about how to maintain peace and equanimity amidst the emotional tension that usually accompanies an important election.
Up until now, peace hasn't been available to me during a presidential election. In the past, the campaign events have usually swept me along, often following the scenario where two candidates are running neck and neck, until I get so caught up in it that I lose my peace. This year I've decided not to wait until things reach a fever pitch.
I've developed what I call my "Plan for Peace" in the election year of 2008. It begins with examining every thought that isn't productive. What is it that takes away my peace? What mental intrusions do I need to be alert to? Here are some I've already begun praying about:
