'I COULD SING AND TALK FREELY AGAIN'

One late-spring night in 2006, before a testimony meeting at our local Christian Science branch church, I was feeling very agitated physically and asked my daughter if she would pray for me during the service. I was able to sit still during the meeting.

But the next morning, when I awoke, one side of my face was paralyzed. My speech was distorted, and it was difficult to eat and drink. The symmetry of my face also looked visibly different, and it was difficult for me to see clearly out of one of my eyes.

I rang a Christian Science practitioner to ask for treatment through prayer. Over the next week, I prayed specifically to overcome my fear of permanent disability and pain. I wanted to challenge the threat of immobilizing fear itself, something I'd periodically struggled with since I was a child. In fact, there had been times when after being frightened by something, I'd almost fainted.
