EFFECTS OF SNAKEBITE QUICKLY DISAPPEAR

One hot, hot day in the summer of 2006, as I reached for the garden hose to water my front lawn, I felt an awful pain in my hand. As I looked down, I saw a snake slither away through the grass.

My son and daughter-in-law were staying with me and were somewhere in my house, but I didn't want to alarm them or spoil our visit. Instead, I went to my screened-in porch and immediately began praying. Turning to God for help was a natural, almost automatic response because I was so used to solving my problems that way. Through prayer in Christian Science, I've experienced many healing, including those of toothaches, upset stomachs, and constant colds.

As I prayed, the first thing I thought of was God. When I'm in trouble, I've found simply thinking the word God comforts and strengthens me—I expect because it affirms His presence. So in this situation I exercised my confidence, repeating what I knew about God and His help. For example, I reminded myself that God is a dependable and reliable help in every situation.
