RIDING BUDDY

A WHILE AGO I received a copy of a motorcycle enthusiasts' magazine, with a note from the editor suggesting I turn to a specific article inside. The author was a friend of mine who leads motorcycle excursions and with whom I'd recently spent a day riding through freezing weather. I was surprised to find two photos of myself, illustrating an article about the ideal "riding buddy."

The article reminded me that riding at speed in close proximity to other bikers presents some interesting relationship issues, particularly since verbal communication isn't usually possible.

I've ridden motorcycles seriously for about ten years. I ride solo as well as in groups, and as result have learned to communicate and relate to others on the road in new ways. Aside from hand signals and other nonverbal communication strategies, I've also become more insistent with my prayerful stance on the road. I always acknowledge my own safety in God, as well as the safety and harmony of others. I believe this silent, prayerful vigilance is the most valuable contribution I can make to any situation.
