Fear—snuffed out

Have you ever been very afraid of something? The Kids' Sentinel recently talked with Mark Swinney, a Christian Science practitioner and teacher. We wanted to know what helps him not be afraid. Here are some things he shared:

I didn't really notice it at first—but after learning that God is Love, I found that I spent less time being afraid. A lot of fear was simply snuffed out as soon as I opened up to the idea that Love, God, is everywhere. The Bible talks about this (see I John 4:16). And it's nice how something written a long time ago applies so perfectly to your life today.

God's love, and all the power that goes with it, surrounds you, even if you can't see it. It never leaves. And with God, you're never threatened. Why? Because there isn't anything outside of God. Love is always all around you and is constantly expressing its goodness in you. I like to allow myself moments of feeling this deep down. I get very quiet, to see there's nothing present but Love's goodness and care.
