'AS A SPIRITUAL IDEA, I WAS INTACT AND WHOLE ...'

One beautiful autumn morning, I was out on my patio, sweeping away the leaves and ornamental persimmons that had fallen from a nearby tree. Suddenly, my foot slipped on a mushy persimmon, and I fell off the edge of the patio, landing about three feet down and breaking the fall with my right hand.

I felt I might have broken my wrist, because even touching it lightly caused pain. A large lump immediately formed, and my hand and arm began to ache and swell.

I felt very frightened, but my immediate choice for healing was to contact a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment. I explained what had happened and that I was in pain and felt very fearful. I also told her that at the time of the fall, I'd been thinking very critical thoughts about someone, and was afraid that I'd fallen because I hadn't been listening to God.
