FREEDOM FROM A SKIN CONDITION

Originally published in O Arauto da Ciência Cristã

I was a stickler for cleanliness. I've always kept the luncheonette I operate very clean, and was very picky about the restaurants where I ate because I was wary of their hygienic practices. I paid a lot of attention to the appearance of people and places, always comparing them with that of my luncheonette. I was proud when I concluded that my establishment was cleaner than those of my competition.

One day I woke with intense itching all over my body. Purulent pimples appeared under my arms and between my fingers, and then spread to the rest of my body. My appearance was not at all pleasant. I felt dirty and repugnant.

I began to be ashamed of how I looked. Even on very hot days, I would go to the luncheonette wearing longsleeved blouses, and I worried that my customers might feel repelled, or would question our standards of cleanliness and would stop eating there.
