SUDDENLY FREE FROM PAIN
One of my jobs at the distribution center where I work involves using a 300-pound metal bridge to transfer large tubs from one conveyer system to another. I push and pull it back and forth all day. When I first started this job, others told me that the pressure on my wrists could injure them. And over time one of my wrists did become very painful and hurt most of the time. I was scared that it was permanently damaged. Although I never had the condition diagnosed, it felt to me like a severe sprain.
Christian Science has taught me that my identity is spiritual, and that as the Bible states I'm made in God's "image" (see Gen. 1:27). I knew from experience that to accept this injury as part of God's creation could make it seem even more real to me. So I refused to accept it as part of me. This refusal kept me receptive to God's care and facilitated a healing that resulted through spiritual means alone.
Although I denied God's creation could be injured, I had yet to learn the importance of also acknowledging this truth: that my strength comes from God. The health and dexterity represented in the normal functioning of my wrist were qualities of God that could never be injured.
