A WALK TO THE PARK WITH PRAISE

PARENTS' SIMPLEST PRAYERS can bring deeply satisfying results. Several years ago when we had three active kids around, I cherished any small amount of time I could have to myself, so that I could commune with God.

One day, I was looking forward to some quiet time for prayer during the walk to the baseball field where my young son was warming up with his teammates for an afternoon game. It happened to be an important game against the league champions. Although our boys had practiced hard, they had not done well all season, and I knew how much they needed our support.

As it turned out, my teenage daughter arrived home from her classes just as I was getting ready to leave. She was full of the day's activities, which she was eager to share with me. I love my daughter and usually greatly enjoyed her enthusiastic sharing. But that day had been so demanding that I felt I just had to have time alone with God. Still, not wanting to disappoint my daughter, I invited her to walk with me to the baseball field.
