Rather than ten directives, the Ten Commandments are graceful guides to aspire to—particularly when viewed in light of Jesus' claim that God is an entirely divine and loving Presence. God, the caring Shepherd, inspires each of His children with the joy and determination to seek, and find, excellence.

The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary introduces the Commandments this way: "First, God and Moses perceived obedience to the laws, not as a way of or precondition to salvation, but as the grateful response of those who had already been saved."
