SHE COULDN'T STUMBLE OUT OF GOD'S LOVE

Seven summers ago, my daughter, Lucia, and I were visiting The Cloisters here in New York. She was two years old at the time. It's a great museum for kids because of its beautiful outdoor gardens. We went with good friends—Maylis and her two kids, whom we spent most of our afternoons with, and some out-of-town visitors. My friend Maylis offered to keep Lucia and her own kids in the garden, so the rest of us could enjoy the inside exhibits at a more leisurely pace.

When I returned about 15 minutes later, Maylis was holding a sobbing Lucia on her lap. She'd tripped on the brick sidewalk and smacked her head on a wooden bench. One of Lucia's eyes was swollen open in an odd way, and there was already a large bump on her head, as well as quite a bit of bruising.

Maylis is a very religious woman and had immediately talked to Lucia about God. I was so grateful for that, but I was taken aback by the way Lucia's eye looked. Her father is not a Christian Scientist, and we have an agreement to take care of her healthcare needs medically, unless there's an immediate healing. And while I wasn't averse to seeking medical treatment, I wanted Lucia to feel better right away, and I knew this was possible by turning directly to God. Besides I didn't know New York City well at the time, but did know that our doctor's office was quite a distance away. I called my husband and let him know what had happened. While he was concerned, of course, he let me know that he knew I was taking good care of Lucia.
