TRUTH, ALWAYS THE VICTOR
PONTIUS PILATE'S QUERY TO JESUS of Nazareth—"What is truth?"—continues to ring, without a definitive answer, as far as many people are concerned. Theologians and philosophers have delved deeply into this question in search of a satisfying answer. Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and a deeply religious thinker of her time, held the conviction that the only real truth originates in God. And her discovery was unique in that she concluded that God is, in fact, Truth itself. This realization continues to bring healing and hope to people around the globe.
"The question, 'What is Truth,'" Mrs. Eddy wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "convulses the world" (p. 223). Science and Health addresses that question head–on. It illustrates that when the spiritual truth is understood that God is supreme good, and that we are His perfect spiritual manifestation, then anyone can realize the freedom and healing this understanding brings to the human condition. "Truth is always the victor," she concluded (p. 380).
Mrs. Eddy's deep desire was to teach others to emulate Christ Jesus' healing acts—to find for themselves what he called the truth that makes free (see John 8:32). This impelled her to establish the Church of Christ, Scientist.
