A PIVOTAL MOMENT
When I was in my late teens, a friend introduced me to Christian Science by inviting me to a Christian Science lecture in our city. I had been searching for answers for many years about God and life and had been exposed to a number of different religions, but nothing had made sense to me. I didn't know much about my friend's religion, and I accepted the invitation partly out of politeness, but also out of curiosity about Christian Science. I had no idea what to expect.
I recall the lecturer speaking about God as divine Love. Shortly after, I found myself feeling a loving presence while sitting in the lecture. For the first time in my life, I felt very strongly that God was with me. Before I knew it, the lecture had ended. While I couldn't remember anything I heard beyond those words "God is love" (I John 4:8), the wonderful feeling of God's presence stayed with me for quite a while, along with a great joy. The whole experience gave me a different perspective on God and religion.
After the lecture, I felt a sense of peace—that God was knowable, present with me, a reality. My previous outlook on God as distant, theoretical, and mysterious, had been transformed. As a result, I began reading issues of this magazine, the Christian Science Sentinel.
