HEALED OF SINUSITIS AND TUBERCULOSIS

Since I came to know Christian Science more than 30 years ago, I have had many healings as a result of studying and applying the teachings of Science and Health. I would like to share two healings that I consider landmarks in my progress as a student, albeit informal, of Christian Science.

The first healing I had, which proved to be the turning point in my life as a Christian, occurred when I picked up a copy of Science and Health at a book sale at the law library of Cornell University. I was a graduate student there, doing research for my PhD dissertation. The moment I opened the book, I was arrested by the first statement in the "Preface." It so impressed itself upon me that I've remembered it ever since: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (p. vii). I continued to read through the first few pages, and, liking what I read, decided to buy the book.

At that time, I was on therapeutic medication for an incipient form of tuberculosis that had been diagnosed more than nine years earlier. I had been taking medicine for the condition on and off ever since. I also was an adherent of another faith. So my first encounter with Christian Science and its method of healing precipitated a lot of mental searching. As a physical scientist (I am a chemist by profession), I had been trained to be analytical and critical, even skeptical. But as I read through Science and Health, I could not deny the truth and rationality of its statements about God and His almighty power, even though the doctrines of Christian Science were quite different from those I was familiar with in other religions.
