HOMESICKNESS CONQUERED

Originally published in Le Heraut de la Christian Science

In the summer of 2004, I went to Australia to take a six-week English course. I had an experience there that gave me the opportunity not only to get closer to God but also to understand what it really means to communicate with Him.

I left France on July 9, very happy with the idea of spending six weeks on the other side of the world, in a place that was totally different from home. However, after I arrived in Melbourne on July 11, I suddenly felt very alone. I did not know my host family, and I only wanted one thing: to see my family again. Already I was missing them terribly. I didn't even feel like praying.

But then I stopped to think, and realized that I could do something. I picked up my Bible and Science and Health, and started reading the Bible Lesson for that week (found in the Christian Science Quarterly). It's extraordinary what a lot of good that did me. After a few moments, I felt a lot less alone, and I even felt a wave of happiness wash over me.
