"Seated under colorful flags hanging from the ceiling, about 100 Columbus-area residents began their day [on August 17] at the Columbus ['Georgia] Government Center praying for the schools, the community, political leaders, and respect for all of creation. . . .

"John Phillips, superintendent of Muscogee County Schools, was seated on the platform and gave opening remarks. 'We have the opportunity to serve youth, who are the future of the country,' including handicapped, learning disabled, and troubled youths, Phillips said afterward. 'We want to continue to educate young people until we touch their hearts and souls.'

"Echoing Phillips' remarks, Columbus Mayor Bob Poydasheff said the city's progress won't be fully realized until 'we seek guidance in prayer, and respect and honor each other as children of God.' Poydasheff added that new industry leaders won't be attracted here 'if the city is divided.' The interdenominational prayer breakfast included organizers from various faiths but mostly the Christian and Jewish communities."
