Giving and getting

PARENTS DEFER THEIR OWN PLANS so they can provide for their children. Soldiers, police officers, firefighters, and others step into harm's way to protect and defend people they don't even know. Average people all over the world quietly place others' interests ahead of their own.

Why? Because it is natural for us to do so. That's the way God made us. And much good is expressed in the world through unselfishness, generosity, thoughtfulness, kindness, and individual responsibility. In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy wrote: "... blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another's good" (p. 518).

About 12 years ago I was getting ready to buy a motorcycle. I had looked forward to it for a long time, and finally everything was set. I had found a good used bike, and had a cashier's check in hand. But that evening I got a phone call from a family member, which changed my plans. The money I had set aside for the bike was the exact amount needed just then by this family member.
