"Parents must lead by example and show children the importance of forging friendships with peers from different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds. Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmed Badawi [acting Prime Minister of Malaysia] ... urged parents to build greater friendship and rapport with neighbors, colleagues and friends from diverse backgrounds. [He] said this was essential to show children the importance of integration. Speaking to a packed audience attending a seminar on 'Wholesome Families: The Pulse of the Nation' ... Abdullah said that while the education system played a crucial role in forging national unity, parents, especially young couples in a multi-ethnic, cultural and religious country like Malaysia, should also play their roles.

"Apart from strengthening values such as tolerance and respect for others, parents must ensure that their children continue to grow in an environment that is reflective of our country. We must encourage our children to mix, play and grow with children of other races and faiths."
