Healing gained, mobility restored
For several years I have enjoyed power walking in our neighborhood, on a route that I have affectionately named "my beat." A couple of years ago, one of my knees became extremely painful, making it hard to walk and constantly bothering me even when sitting or lying in bed. It appeared to be the result of my having twisted it in some way. There were times when the condition would improve, but I still wasn't comfortable.
All my life I have turned to God for healing, so it was natural for me to pray about this situation. I began by realizing that God is the Creator of us all. He is completely good, and therefore everything about His sons and daughters must be good, too. The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful. In His presence, there can only be harmony and freedom—not pain.
Next I needed to get over a strong feeling of discouragement that I couldn't be active. I would watch people walking and running in my neighborhood and on the beach, and long to be out there with them. A verse from the book of Hebrews helped me close the door on the temptation to be sorry for myself or envy others: "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have; for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (13:5). Instead of conversing with myself about what I lacked, I practiced being content with what I had by feeling spiritual energy, freedom, and joy in my life as a musician, wife, and mother, even if temporarily it couldn't be through recreational walking.
