CLAUDE ELLIOTT, MAYOR OF GANDER, AND HIS WIFE, GERRI

Claude: The Bible tells us, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And that's what we do. There are all different churches around the province. But regardless of your religion, the common denominator is "Help your brothers and sisters."

And 9/11 certainly showed that. For five days, people put aside their own political beliefs, their own religious beliefs, and we came together and said, "There are 6,000 people who need some help."

We tried to meet everybody's religious beliefs. We had people who couldn't eat certain things on certain days. There were people who had to pray every morning at a certain time. It was quite a challenge to put people where they could pray and worship in their own way. The churches were open 24 hours. And volunteers were there at all times. Clergy were there.
