More than human destiny
Is it fatalistic to believe in destiny? Can we overcome what has already been determined by fate?
These are questions that came to me as I watched the recent Steven Spielberg movie, Minority Report. The movie thrills with impressive special effects (a couple that are not for the squeamish). And more than offering just these techno-marvels, the movie highlights some important cautionary political ideas. Yet, what stood out most for me was a more metaphysical question that the plot raised: Just because we've been told that something is destined to happen, does it mean it is going to happen?
