The health of children
A Bible story helped me realize that when we know how it is that our children are really God's children and focus on how splendidly God has created them, we can feel less fear for them. I saw this firsthand when I was afraid for the health of Rebecca, my daughter.
I had always been extremely fearful when it came to the physical problems or well-being of any of my children. When Rebecca was a young teenager, she started to have all the symptoms of bronchitis. Despite being so concerned, I knew from past experience that the most effective treatment I could give her would be to trust God in prayer. I knew in my heart that since God created Rebecca, He was maintaining her in perfect health.
As Rebecca lay sick in bed, I silently implored God to help me. I had just been studying the Bible story of Hannah in the book of First Samuel. This story had always bothered me. Hannah had never been able to conceive a child, and yearned for one. Finally she went to the temple and prayed deeply and silently. She promised God that if He would grant her a son, she would give her child to Him "all the days of his life" (I Sam. 1:11). Not long after, Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to Samuel. True to her promise, after Samuel was weaned, she brought him to Eli, the priest in the temple. And Samuel grew up there, helping Eli and serving the Lord.
