GATHERING NEWS STORIES with a spiritual perspective week by week, we wondered what kinds of material the Sentinel of 100 years ago carried. Here is a glimpse into some of the Items of Interest and other excerpts from the Sentinel at the turn of the 19th century.
The Supremacy of Love.—The assertion that love is the greatest of all spiritual gifts has come to be a universal teaching of the Christian Church. Here all shades of opinion unite; and all are orthodox in their creed concerning love. Its supremacy becomes manifest when we look to God, and remember that He is revealed unto us as love. Love in man is the Godlike thing. The divine in him is manifest in proportion as love rules his life. Love springs forth from the very center of man's being. Its seat is the very shrine of his nature. It gives efficency to all other gifts; without it they become void and useless. It sweeps outward as far as life stretches in its possibilities.
