Prayer and gratitude heal sinus condition
My gratitude for Christian Science centers on its gift of making God knowable and powerful in my life and the lives of my children.
For over a decade I suffered several times a year with acute symptoms of a sinus condition. Accompanying symptoms of headache and fever would incapacitate me for several days at a time, and my throat would be constricted in a way that made it virtually impossible to speak. I prayed in earnest but not with authority. I'm grateful for the practitioners and family members who prayed for me at different times. The only peace and comfort I could find was in thanking God that there was a solution that He was making known to me, even if I seemed to grasp it only step by step.
A major turning point came when I realized that just because one symptom of the illness came, that didn't mean I had to accept the whole sequence of symptoms. I could see that the first suggestion of pain did not need to send me into a tailspin of wondering how long I would have to suffer. I could see the authority that was mine in following Mary Baker Eddy's counsel, "When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the material senses with divine Science. Let your higher sense of justice destroy the false process of mortal opinions which you name law, and then you will not be confined to a sickroom nor laid upon a bed of suffering in payment of the last farthing, the last penalty demanded by error" (Science and Health, p. 390). The cycle of symptoms was broken, and the attacks became less severe.
