CLEAR THE MECHANISM!

In the film For Love of the Game, Kevin Costner plays a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. While standing on the mound, preparing to pitch, he says to himself, "Clear the mechanism." Then all of the noise throughout the stadium suddenly fades from his consciousness as he focuses on pitching.

As I watched this scene, I couldn't help thinking of this mechanism–clearing statement Mary Baker Eddy makes in Miscellaneous Writings: "A little more grace, a motive made pure, a few truths tenderly told, a heart softened, a character subdued, a life consecrated, would restore the right action of the mental mechanism, and make manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God" (p. 354).
