WORKPLACE

Stressed Out?

"I had started this work in August, and by January the department was in pretty good shape."

At First I Was thrilled. I had just moved across the country with my husband because of a promotion. Although it was just a few years after college, I was going to be an appraisal supervisor at a large company. I had never met my boss or the people I would be supervising, nor had I spent any significant time in the city where I would be working.

The reality of the situation began to sink in when my boss called me in the first day and went down the list of nine appraisers and support staff members I would be supervising, from best to worst. And, as she said, the last one needed to be fired. Also, my predecessor had left to get married, and she had been so involved in her wedding plans that she hadn't done a thing for about six months. This left an enormous backlog of large appraisals I needed to complete, which meant a great deal of driving in an unfamiliar metropolitan area.

Wow! It was a tall order. I was ready to turn around and head home, but I knew that wasn't an option. Immediately and daily I began to pray—to acknowledge the truth of God and man.
