The adventure of spiritual progress

Most of us have felt at some point a yearning to progress—whether it came as a sense of excitement to discover more of what life truly is or because of a feeling of dissatisfaction with present conditions. Progress, however, is more than a vision of hopeful possibilities. Progress means moving forward, actively engaged in improvement.

Spiritual progress is synonymous with improving one's practical understanding of God, or Spirit. And as Science and Health states, "... to understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire" (p. 3).

I first started to understand the rigors of spiritual progress when I was involved in whitewater kayaking. Whitewater rivers have always given me a workshop for learning what humility and trust in God can bring to the human experience. Paddling experiences have provided rich analogies of God and man's inseparable relationship.
