I am grateful for many examples of God's care and guidance...

I am grateful for many examples of God's care and guidance in my life. Recently, I have been remembering one of those instances, which made me feel God's tender, ever-present, on-the-spot care in what seemed to be dire circumstances.

One morning a dozen or more years ago, I was helping my two elementary school children prepare for the school day when suddenly I was overwhelmed with a strong feeling of being extremely unwell. I quickly told the children to finish preparations on their own and went to lie down on the couch. After they had left on the school bus, I made my way upstairs to my bed. I urgently wanted to call a Christian practitioner for treatment. But I seemed unable to get to the telephone across the room. "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires...," Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 1), and my desire was indeed a prayer that brought results. First, thought I couldn't move normally, I did manage to get to the telephone and dial the practitioner. Then, within minutes all of the physical symptoms literally vanished, and I was able to go about my normal day with strength—and with deep gratitude.

During the night, though, I started to feel the symptoms once again. I knew that I needed to refute immediately any thought that this condition could recur. I needed to deny that it could be a part of my being. I also knew that God's goodness was present right there. Once again I called the practitioner. In spite of its being the wee hours of the morning, he was completely alert, confident, and comforting. After I hung up I continued steadfastly denying that any material condition could have any power over me. Relief wasn't quite as immediate as it had been that morning, and I needed to be strong and firm in my mental persistence of my freedom as a loved child of God.
