Whether terrorist acts are carried out by individuals such as the Unabomber in the United States or by radical groups in various parts of the world, the intent of such efforts is often to halt the progress of humanity. Terrorism would hold people hostage to fear.
Mary Baker Eddy believed that Christians were to face down such evils. She understood that intelligent prayer and obedience to God would bring evil acts to a halt, and she made clear that evil methods and actions are never justified. In her Miscellaneous Writings she says, "The pent-up elements of mortal mind need no terrible detonation to free them. Envy, rivalry, hate need no temporary indulgence that they be destroyed through suffering; they should be stifled from lack of air and freedom" (p. 356).
The authors in this week's "in focus" section have experienced the truth of her statement, and they explain how we can do likewise.
