Three summers ago, my husband and I found ourselves overwhelmed with work. In addition, we had a preschooler that we wanted to devote as much time to as possible. This was a time of great spiritual growth, but one where the temptation to wish for more time, more money, seemed to be always biting at our heels. With all this, I was battling one episode of influenza after another.
In October, I was laid up for quite some time with flu, and I also realized I was pregnant. My illness got worse. I had a pain in my side that made it difficult to breath or lie down, and a very severe cough. I had been having treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, who helped me overcome frustration with myself and fear for the baby. There is so much I learned from this experience, it is difficult to put into words. But three things stand out to me: obedience, a clearer spiritual understanding of body, and how to love myself.
I was inspired to begin reading Mary Baker Eddy's Prose Works, where I truly began to meet our Leader and understand her expectations of Christian Scientists. This book contains more gems of spiritual enlightenment than I could ever have dreamed of, and I could not put it down.
