For many years, I was self-conscious about a lump on my face
For many years, I was self-conscious about a lump on my face. Christian Scientist friends never commented about it, but acquaintances who were not Scientists would sometimes wonder about it. A dentist commented that the lump could be easily removed through surgery.
But I wasn't interested in surgery. I knew that Christian Science could heal this condition, and I persisted in my prayers through many years, sometimes requesting treatment from a Christian Science practitioner.
I felt this condition would disqualify me from being elected as a Reader for the services in my branch church. When the members elected me, however, I realized that I was more aware of the problem than others. My prayer during my term as Reader focused my thought toward the unlimited healing power of the church services I was participating in and away from preoccupation with my personal needs. I feel this consistent, selfless prayer for church, and a deeper appreciation of our pastor, the Bible and Science and Health, did much to prepare my thought for healing.
