Throughout my life I had had many physical healings by relying on God. When it came to problems with teeth, however, I had had only some success. So, five years ago, when I had an abscessed tooth, I decided to go to a dentist, and not rely on Christian Science. That was Friday, and the soonest I could see a dentist was Monday. Sunday night, the pain got so bad I couldn't sleep. I sat up in bed and grumpily said, "All right, I'll handle the case in Christian Science." Then a host of thoughts from God poured into my consciousness!

The first was a statement from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: "God never endowed matter with power to disable Life or to chill harmony with a long and cold night of discord" (p. 378). This gave me hope and a sense of dominion. I understood that matter could not ache, or be swollen. I saw clearly that matter could no more feel pain than could the pavement on the street. Matter is inert, mindless.

The second point was that God, Spirit, is my substance—not matter. I thought about how perfect God is; that He is incapable of discord or decay; and that He is forever intact and all-harmonious. I saw that I do not have another substance apart from God called matter or my body. God is the only substance I have.
