One day, a few weeks before our first baby was born, I was...

One day, a few weeks before our first baby was born, I was home alone when a neighbor telephoned me and asked if the fire she saw from her home was on our ranch. I looked out of the window to a most frightening sight. Huge flames were burning across our wheat field and seemed headed for our home. It was the middle of wheat harvest, and we had a large stack of sacked wheat on the ground near the house. The neighbor said she would call the fire department, which was about ten miles away.

I then called a Christian Science practitioner. By this time I was crying and very upset. She said she would pray, and told me to stop crying and to read my Bible and Science and Health. I was obedient and took these books into another room, where I wouldn't need to look at the fire again. When I opened my Bible, the first words I read were from Proverbs: "Who hath gathered the wind in his fists?" (30:4) I was overjoyed because I felt this was a direct answer to my need, telling me that God is in control, that He is the only power, and that nothing harmful could happen to me or our home. We are safe with God. The fire was halted before it reached our home.

This was a very far-reaching proof of divine protection. Every detail was taken care of perfectly. The fire department had arrived very quickly and extinguished the fire. And the fire had burned a straight path through the field that made harvesting the remaining wheat easier. The insurance was paid promptly and adequately.
