When I was manufacturing manager for a small electronics...

When I was manufacturing manager for a small electronics firm, one day my boss, the owner of the company, told me that a particular order to an overseas customer had to be delivered far earlier than the delivery date to which I had previously committed. I explained to him that, given our workload, it would be impossible to comply with his request. He continued to pressure me to meet the early deadline, however, and I began to feel I was in an impossible situation, possibly with my employment hanging in the balance.

At this point, a wonderful thought occurred to me: Deal with this from a totally spiritual standpoint. I knew this was a thought from God, for in the past I had resorted mostly to human planning and reasoning to solve problems at work. This time, I prayed to know how to handle an apparently material manufacturing problem through prayer. The answer came that at every moment of every day I should affirm in my thought that God, divine Mind, was in control.

Each day while driving to work during this time, I sang Mary Baker Eddy's hymn "'Feed My Sheep'" from the Christian Science Hymnal. It begins, "Shepherd, show me how to go / O'er the hillside steep ..." (No. 304). I prayed to God to help with every decision during the workday, no matter how small, and I refused to become upset or to panic about anything.
