My husband and I had purchased a large old house and were busy fixing it up. One cold day I was home alone when the furnace failed to come on. I went to the basement to see what could be done. I discovered that the pilot light to the furnace had gone out, so I stooped down to relight it. When I struck a match, escaped gas ignited, and there was a blast that blew me backward onto the floor.
I knew I had been burned because of a hot feeling on my face. I felt the stubby ends of the hair on my forehead and on my eyebrows, which had been singed. I also saw that the front of my sweater was scorched, and I was conscious of the smell of burnt wool.
