While out of state on business, I woke up one night with a large and painful swelling on my elbow. When I attended a meeting the next morning, several people were quite alarmed by the appearance of this, and insisted that I go immediately to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.
A doctor diagnosed the elbow as severely infected. I informed him that I was a Christian Scientist and did not want any medication or an operation. I did allow the doctor to drain the elbow.
As soon as I was able, I contacted a Christian Science practitioner. At that point my entire arm was affected, and I was frightened. But the practitioner assured me that God was the only power in control of me. I studied a statement from Science and Health: "All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth" (p. 151).
