The relationship of morality and freedom in society

Last November, Margaret Thatcher, who was Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1979 to 1990, spoke before an audience of 2,500 students, faculty, and guests at Hillsdale College, Michigan.
In the week in which citizens of the United States mark the anniversary of national independence, we thought Sentinel readers might be interested in sharing Lady Thatcher's views on ways in which the Judeo-Christian tradition has provided the moral foundation for freedom in this and other nations in the West. Also, the editorial that follows this column discusses both the moral and the spiritual foundation for human progress.
