After many years of periodic indiscretions, I learned that the Bible and Science and Health are reliable guides to life, and are my best sources of instruction in how to make wise decisions. In the New Testament we read: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (II Tim. 3:16, 17). Had I read that at an early age, understood it, and practiced it, what agonies could have been avoided.

When I was in my teens an older sister cared for me. She had had a brief involvement with Christian Science, and sometimes took me to church. Upon leaving my sister's care, I left the Bible and Science and Health completely unexplored.

My junior year of high school came during the great Depression of the 1930s. Though like many others I was much concerned about where my next meal was coming from, I mostly thought about becoming a successful artist. So when I landed a position as art director of an advertising agency, my goals and dreams became a reality. I reveled in the glory of personal accomplishment. Added to a habit of smoking was heavy drinking and also promiscuity. (At this point, the serpent in the Bible allegory of Adam and Eve was winning hands down.)
